What to Do

After a Car Accident

Injuries that are caused by a car wreck can leave you feeling dazed and confused, flustered, and forgetful. Even for the most seasoned driver.

Following an incident that involves a car, truck, motorcycle, bicycle, or pedestrian, more commonly referred to as a car accident, there are key steps that should be taken to make sure you are protected in the future.

These steps will help you if you need to file a claim or pursue a case because of the injury or the impact it has on your life moving forward.

If you or a passenger is injured in any way, stay where you are unless it’s unsafe to do so. Call 911 or ask a bystander to do so, and wait for help to arrive.

Your health and safety is our number one concern.

If you or someone in your party is able to do so, the following steps will help when putting together a case for your accident.

Step 2: Exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver.

Make sure to gather the following information:

  • full name of driver and contact information;
  • name of insurance company and policy number;
  • drivers license and license plate number;
  • type, color, model of vehicle;
  • location of accident. Note any cross streets or other markers that would be helpful to those who will investigate the accident later.
  • police report if it is available.

Step 3: Document the accident to the best of your ability.

  • Take pictures and videos of the scene, of your car, and any other vehicles or people involved in the incident.
  • Identify the officers at the scene and get a copy of the police report.
  • Take down names and contact information of witnesses.

This is not for you or the police to determine, this is part of the legal process.

Step 4: Open an Insurance Claim

Opening an insurance claim will allow your insurance company to pay some of your medical expenses and will make them aware that a crash has happened. This is one of the reasons working with our office can help you. We can contact the insurance company for you, open the claim, and work to make sure your bills are being paid.
