How to Stay Safe During the Summer Months to Avoid Personal Injuries

by | Jun 20, 2023 | Personal Injury | 0 comments

Summer’s coming, which means lots of outdoor fun is right around the corner. Of course, more time spent outdoors means more opportunities to incur personal injuries.  So the question is: how can you avoid personal injuries this summer season? What can you do to keep injuries at bay? A number of things, many of which we’re going to review below. Here’s how to keep yourself safe and avoid a personal injury claim this summer.

Drive Defensively

You should always engage in defensive driving. This is essentially the idea of expecting other drivers to make mistakes, and then reacting accordingly. Boiled down to its core, it’s about exercising caution on the road. Defensive driving is vital at all points of the year. However, in the summer, it’s even more important. This is because, in the summertime, there are bound to be even more drivers on the road. What’s more, they’re bound to be speeding and acting recklessly.  So, keep plenty of clearance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Scan the area as you pass through intersections. Just be vigilant and remain prepared for the worst. This might seem obvious to you. However, not everyone drives defensively. And, in the end, doing so could save you a lot of pain and inconvenience.

Be Careful Around the Pool

Do you own a pool? If so, your risk of injury and liability is high. As such, you must be as careful around your pool as possible. First of all, make sure that your pool is gated. This will prevent young kids from accidentally falling into it. Also, make sure there’s plenty of traction on your pool deck. This will prevent slips and falls, and thus negate a bevy of would-be injuries.  Finally, when the pool is in use, make sure to remain vigilant. It doesn’t take long for someone to go underwater. By remaining vigilant, you’ll give yourself time to save someone in the event of a potential drowning.

Practice Safe Bicycling

One of the great things about the summer months is that they make it warm enough to go for bicycle rides. Unfortunately, a leisurely bike ride can turn into a dangerous situation in a matter of seconds. This is why it’s vital to practice safe bicycling. Not only should you wear the proper protective gear (ie. a helmet, padding, reflective gear) but you should also make sure to follow the rules of the road.  Like to ride at night? You should avoid it as much as possible. If you do engage in night riding, you should equip yourself and your bike with lighting of some kind.

Avoid Riding a Motorcycle in the Rain

Summer’s also a great time for motorcyclists to get out and enjoy the open road. When weather conditions are favorable, a motorcycle ride can be equal parts exciting and invigorating. However, when there’s rain, riding a motorcycle can be extremely dangerous.  This is why, unless you’re an extremely experienced biker, you should resist riding in the rain as much as possible. It’s hard enough to keep a 4-wheeled car stable while driving in the rain. Keeping a 2-wheeled motorcycle stable in the rain is a seismic struggle. And if you lose control of a motorcycle, the results can be tragic.

Mind the Heat

The warmth of summer is always welcome. However, that initial warmth can turn to brutal heat quicker than you realize. And that brutal heat has the potential to have a strong negative effect on the human body.  This is why, when going out for the day, you need to be sure to protect yourself from the sun. Carry water with you, wear sun-protective clothing, and apply sunscreen. Be particularly mindful of any children who are with you, as you’re responsible for their health while they’re in your care.  Also, make sure not to keep kids or pets locked in the car while the vehicle is turned off. During the summer months, the heat inside a car can reach incredible levels within just a few minutes.

Stretch

When the weather warms up, more and more people spend time outdoors. Often, this leads to increased exercise. For instance, you might find yourself playing pickup basketball more. Or, you might find that you’re going for more hikes. Increased exercise is obviously a good thing. However, it also increases your risk of injury. This is why, before exercising, you are strongly advised to stretch.  Stretching doesn’t seem like much but it alone can help to prevent injuries. When you pair it with wearing the correct clothing, eating the right foods, and practicing the proper athletic techniques, you can go a long way in protecting your body. We advise starting every day out with a stretch session. This will keep you loose and enable you to navigate through your day with control and poise.
